Moving from Vancouver to Kelowna: 390 Kilometres Over the Coquihalla in One Day

vancouver to kelowna movers

Quick Answer: Moving from Vancouver to Kelowna is about 390 kilometres over the Coquihalla and the 97C Connector, and roughly four and a half hours of driving. With one dedicated crew, it is a one-day move. You Move Me Vancouver loads in the Lower Mainland in the morning, crosses the passes, and unloads in the Okanagan the same afternoon. From October through April, we plan around the chain rules and DriveBC.

Moving from Vancouver to Kelowna has become the Lower Mainland’s favourite escape. Remote workers, young families, and retirees all make the same drive east for the same reasons: a house they can afford, a lake at the end of the street, and a summer that actually feels like one. The trip is short enough to do in a day and mountainous enough to need a plan. This guide covers the route, the winter rules on the passes, the timing, what changes when you stay in BC but leave the coast, and where Lower Mainland arrivals tend to settle.

Why the Lower Mainland Keeps Heading for the Okanagan

Housing starts the conversation. A Surrey townhouse budget buys a detached home with a yard in Glenmore or West Kelowna. Remote work made the move possible for people who once needed a Burnaby office. Retirees want the dry air, the wineries, and the golf. Families want the schools and a commute measured in minutes. And Okanagan Lake sits in the middle of all of it. The trade-off is a real winter, with snow that stays on the ground, which many coast people find they like more than they expected.

The Route: Three Highways and Two Passes

Leave the Lower Mainland on Highway 1 east through the Fraser Valley to Hope. Then the Coquihalla, which is Highway 5, climbs north to Merritt. At Merritt, the 97C Okanagan Connector runs east over the Pennask Summit and drops down to Peachland. From there, Highway 97 follows the lake north through West Kelowna and across the bridge into Kelowna. Total distance is about 390 kilometres from Vancouver, and a little less from Langley or Abbotsford. A car does it in four to four and a half hours. A loaded truck runs a little slower on the grades but still lands the same afternoon.

One Crew, One Truck, One Day

Because the move stays inside BC, it skips the interprovincial paperwork of a longer haul. Some companies still quote it as a long distance job with a consolidated load and a delivery window. Our long distance movers in Vancouver run it the direct way. The crew that loads your Lower Mainland home drives over the passes and unloads it in the Okanagan the same day. Your household rides alone, nobody transfers it, and the same faces carry it in at the far end. Every mover is a full-time employee on our payroll, trained and certified in house, never a day labourer picked up that morning. For a look at how we handle the much longer trip from the other direction, our post on Edmonton to Vancouver movers covers it.

Winter on the Passes

The Coquihalla and the Connector are the reason this route needs a seasonal plan. Both climb well above 1,200 metres, and both fall under BC’s winter tire and chain rules from October 1 through April 30. Commercial trucks must carry chains on those highways during that window, and the crews put them on when the signs say so. Snow, ice, and fog close the Coquihalla several times most winters, sometimes for a day. So from October through April we check DriveBC the week of every move, build a buffer into the schedule, and shift the departure when the mountain calls for it. If the Coquihalla closes, the Fraser Canyon on Highway 1 is the long way around. From May through September, the drive is one of the prettiest in the province.

Timing the Move

Summer is the busiest season and the easiest driving, with one wrinkle. Okanagan wildfire season runs July through September, and smoke or a highway closure can shift a date on short notice. September also brings the rental turnover around UBC Okanagan, which fills the Kelowna end. So the calmest windows are late April through June and October, when the passes are open and the smoke has cleared. Book three to five weeks ahead for a summer date.

What Changes When You Stay in BC but Leave the Coast

  • Licence and plates. Nothing changes. Update your address with ICBC and your insurance broker, and you are done.
  • Winter. Kelowna gets real snow and real cold. Winter tires stop being a formality, and the snow shovel comes out of retirement.
  • Dry heat. Summer runs hot and dry. Wood furniture and instruments that lived in coastal humidity need a few weeks to settle, so give them time before you worry about a crack.
  • Strata rules. Kelowna condos run under the same Strata Property Act as Vancouver. Book the service elevator and the loading bay, and expect a damage deposit.

Where Lower Mainland Arrivals Tend to Land

People leaving Kitsilano or Mount Pleasant usually look at the Lower Mission and the downtown core for the walkable blocks and the lakefront. Families from Surrey, Langley, and the Fraser Valley land in Glenmore and Lake Country for newer homes and schools. West Kelowna draws anyone who wants the view across the lake and a shorter drive to the Connector. Tell us both addresses and we plan the truck’s last stretch around them.

Packing for Two Mountain Passes

Four hundred kilometres of grades and switchbacks shake every box. So the fragile rooms need real wrapping. Our packing services can handle the whole home, the kitchen only, or a single tricky piece. Wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes come free with every move. If you are leaving a strata building, book the service elevator and loading bay with your council before we arrive.
